Melbourne: Robert Jolley; The Atlas Press, 1904. Oblong, red paper covers stapled over internal pages. 25 sheets/leaves excluding red covers but including title page and end page: each sheet with printing on one side only. 11 black and white full page illustrations (including last page with "The End"), plus sepia illustrations in the text. Covers battered with amateur tape repair over spine, small chips and tears to edges, some creases and a 25mm tear to back cover. Last and first pages have slipped from staples, though still attached to covers. Second page and last page have a 1cm tear in their margins. Pencilled owner name on title page, light age speckling to edges and outer pages. Internal pages otherwise in very good condition, lovely example of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite's first published book. It was written when Ida was 16 (hence no use of her married name Outhwaite), and the text is hand-written by her older sister Annie. When little Mollie wanders off into the bushland forest, she is watched over and rescued by the kind gentle guiding of a bunyip, the spirit of the forest. A very scarce book indeed, offered for sale on behalf of an elderly collector who has recently moved into smaller accommodation.. First Edition. Original Wraps. Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Ida Rentoul [Outhwaite] . 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
