University of Queensland Press. Queensland, Australia. 1983. [first published in Paris in 1935]. First English Translation 1983. pages xiv + 332 pages + bibliography + index; hardcover, protected; 22.5cm x 15cm; minimal spotting on top and side outer edges o/wise very good plus condition;. This book is one of five books written by the French Anthropologist and philospher, Lucien Levy-Bruhl about the mind of primitive man. It draws for the most part on evidence collected by field workers in Australia and Papua New Guinea. This is the first time that Levy-Bruhl's 1935 publication has been translated into English. Brian Elliott's careful, lucid translation is a timely and valuable contribution to the contemporary revaluation of attitudes towards the Australian Aborigines. Without presuming to criticize or advise Australians about their moral responsibilities, it will help to direct their thinking by revealing aspects of the Aboriginal cultural indentity of which many must be unaware. This translation of the original edition in French is rarely seen.
