LAST ITEM HELD MATCHING THIS TITLE STATED:

Melbourne: Macmillan, 1984. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. 8vo, 293 pages, 16pp b&w plates, 6 maps, index. Page edges lightly soiled, foxed. Previous owner's name and four-line stamp on the (tinted) front flyleaf, by the upper edge of the title page (text not affected). Cloth boards in dust-wrapper. The book recalls the ordeal of Australian airmen of World War II against the Japanese advance through South East Asia to the Pacific in six months of 1941-42. It illustrates the drama of those battles by tracing the experiences of several pilots of those who met the brutality of the Japanese conquest, from their invasion of Malaya on 7 December 1941 - the night before Pearl Harbour - to their opening campaign in New Guinea. The book takes its title from the defeats that crushed the Australians and from the hopelessness of the air battles that they fought. The airmen's own accounts personalise the record of the war and bring the reader into the cockpits of the pilots in their Hudson and Buffalo Aircaraft.
