From the rear cover, 'In the 1860s camels, and men who were skilled to handle them, Afghans or Ghans, from Afghanistan, Baluchistan, the PUnjab, Kasmir and Sind provinces, and some from the Turkish Empire, were brought to Australia for transport in the arid central regions.The Afghans participated in several national projects: building railway and telegraph lines, fences, roads and dams as well as in hauling supplies to and from outback stations and mining camps. The book highlights the contribution of the Afghan cameleers, without whose efforts and hard work the opening of Australia's centre would have been delayed by at least another 50 years'.
