Original papered boards (small bumps on lower edges, minor wear at head of spine, small mark on back near head of spine) with 2 dustwrappers (the original, flimsy and with areas of discolouration, missing a large piece from the back, and the replacement supplied with Part Two, with spine a little yellowed and a short closed tear on the back head edge). Small area of soiling on top edges near spine. With ephemera loosely inserted including the card explaining the replacement dustwrapper, newspaper clippings, a postcard from the collector, and a telegram (in original envelope) announcing the collector's death. Part Two, E - M: [xiv], 276pp, numerous black & white illustrations. Original papered boards (trifling bumping along lower edges) with dustwrapper (a little rubbing, short closed tear on the back head edge). With newspaper clippings loosely inserted. Part Three, N - Z: [xii], 177pp, bidding form tipped in at rear, black & white illustrations. Original papered boards with dustwrapper (spine a little yellowed, a little wear on extremities of front, back lightly rubbed). With newspaper clippings loosely inserted. Although dustwrappers show minor wear, interiors are clean and fresh, and this is generally a very good set. ISBN The A. Edward Newton Collection of Books and Manuscripts. The sale catalogue of the lifelong collector and popularizer of book collecting. "In honor of the man who had devoted his life to books, the sale was planned with great care. Parke-Bernet outdid itself by printing an elaborate catalog with introductions by Professors Osgood and Frederick. All the trappings were arranged for a memorable event. As the sale progressed, however, prices fell below expectations as bidders discovered that many volumes in the Newton library were in less than fine condition. However, Rosenbach's steady customers were delighted to pick up Hardys, Blakes, and Johnsons for bargain prices. The anticipated firecracker of a sale fizzled badly in the fall of 1941, with disappointing returns for the heirs. Newton's reputation easily survived the disaster, however, and his name still conjures up an aura of hearty and optimistic bibliomania." - Dickinson. .
