For many years a colleague of Joseph Banks, he sailed the Pacific with Banks and James Cook in the 'Endeavour' in 1768. With Banks, he described and classified more than one thousand new species. This collection is based on research in Australia, New Zealand, Britain, the United States, Spain, Germany and Scandinavia - where some 180 letters were located and copied, and appear in their original language and reproduced in English here for the first time.
