Foxing to prelims. Mrs Maria Eliza Rundle published her famous work in 1806. It proved immensely popular, going into about 70 editions. Oxford notes an amended form appearing as late as 1893. This attractive, enlarged edition was, to quote from the preface dated 1853 "enriched with the valuable contributions of the late Miss Emma Roberts," and "placed under the careful inspection of a Lady of long experience in housekeeping." Miss Roberts' recipes are indicated with an asterisk. While the condition of this copy is poor, its interest lies in its historical associations: Protected by a calico cover, it bears the owner's details Miss Ellen Lock, Charlotte Plains, September 21st 1863 linking it to the early settlement of the Maryborough district of Victoria, Australia.
