LAST ITEM HELD MATCHING THIS TITLE STATED:

London, John Blockley of Argyll Street . Hand dated 1869. With a wonderful monochrome lithograph by Laby of the picture of an army of Christian Soldiers being guided by a Holy Cross above them. This fascinating version is the Sabine Baring Gould words, though there is no credit for the writer but the music is by T. Blockley and not the more famous Sir Arthur Sullivan version. I understand Baring Gould published the words in 1865 and Sullivan composed the tune in 1871 and so here is a dated 1869 earlier version by T. Blockley and published by his relation John Blockley in 1869, if not earlier. It is advertised as ' The Popular hymn sung in all Churches'. The sheet has an ink date in the top right hand corner of 1869. John Blockley(1800-82).One of a number of composer/ publishers in the middle and later nineteenth century it has been said of Blockley that he ransacked the poetry of Longfellow and particularly Tennyson even before the ink was dry on the paper and certainly the two men made money out of their songs of the Charge of the Light Brigade and Ring out Wild Bells. Folio size with music. Small light brown water stain from the centre bottom edge and intruding marginally on bottom of illustration by ¼ of an inch. Trimmed at the bottom through the publishers imprint else Good. Rare. Early version of famous hymn.
