Slight fading of the colour on the back strip, and a dent on the front edge of the text block. Darkening of the top edge of the text block. There are a couple of pages which are affected by grubby marks. This is a history of the Marranos who had fled the Iberian Peninsula to the imagined safety of the Amsterdam where they threw off altogether the disguise of Christianity, they imported teachers and rabbis and found that an open Jewish community, which rapidly became one of the most cultured and important, as well as the wealthiest, in all of Europe. So unusual a community needed an unusual Rabbi. Early in the 17th century, it found what was required in one, himself a Marrano by birth, who typified in the breadth of his culture and the catholicity of his interests of those two unique societies in which he had been born and in which he grew to manhood..
