The British Sumatra Battalion did not officially exist: it was largely the creation of Dudley Apthorp, the senior British officer among 500 allied men of three services, who had been captured at the fall of Singapore. He transformed these men into a unit with the esprit-de-corps of an old established regiment. Known among themselves as "Appy's Locusts" they were forced to build the Burma Siam railway. Includes casualty and nominal rolls.
