The author was a civilian nurse at Rabaul, in 1942 she was interned by the Japanese at Vunapope and later for three years in Japan, seven nurses from the Territory's Department of Public Health, four from the Methodist Mission, six army nurses, a New Britain plantation owner and an American school-teacher from the Aleutian Islands completed the female captive group, a first-hand glimpse of the Pacific War including how it was viewed from Japan.
