Black coloured boards with red writing to the backstrip. Bumping to the head and to the heel of the backstrip and rubbing to all corners. Foxing and dust marks to the top text block edge and browning and foxing to the other text block edges. Browning and offset tanning to the endpapers and the internal pages have become slightly age toned. Previous owner's name to the free front endpaper. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right hand corner of the front paste down. Plain text dustwrapper with gray background and yellow and white writing to the front panel and white to the spine. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners. There is a little rubbing to the dustwrapper edges and a few small tears. There is that tear measuring 1.25 " to the top left hand corner of the backstrip, with associated creasing. There is a tear to the lower lefthand edge of the spine gutter measuring 2 ". There is a tear to the lower front spine gutter edge, measuring 0.25 ". The back panel has become discoloured and stained and the staining and discoloration has come through to the verso side of the dustwrapper as well. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right hand corner. The 4 trials selected, within this book, dramatically illustrated the development of the law of insanity in relation to trials for murder since the beginning of the 19th century. The cases featured are : The Trial of James Hadfield, 1800 who attempted to assassinate George III; The Trial of Daniel M'Naughton, 1843 who shot Drummond, Sir Robert Peel's secretary mistaking him for the Prime Minister himself; The Straffen Case, 1952 which raised the question of the criminal responsibility of the mentallt disabled and The Trial of Gunther Padola in 1959, who murdered Police-Sargent Pudy, and the courts were called upon to deal with amnesia from the standpoint of fitness to plead to a charge of murder.
