New York Harry N Abrams 1989. Folio hardcover 542pp index, colour illus. very good, fep creased / good+ d/w is a bit wrinkled with rear edge-crease loose, in very good slipcase. Heavy book, extra post may apply. Originally published in 1613, the great florilegium by Basilius Besler of Nuremberg is one of the most ambitious and splendid books ever produced on ornamental flowering plants. In more than 1,000 drawings of great accuracy and an astonishing freshness of color, Besler -- a botanist-apothecary -- recorded, season by season, every variety of plant in the fabulous garden he helped create for the bishop-prince of a small German town.Only 300 copies of the original florilegium were printed, of which fewer than 10 colored examples -- each valued today at over one million dollars -- remain in existence. This is the first facsimile ever produced of one of these rare, hand-colored volumes. The botanical prints are accompanied by the 17th-century captions, rendered in exquisite calligraphy, and by the modern English names of the plants. The commentaries on the plates were written especially for this edition by the eminent botanist Gerard G. Aymonin. .
