The author volunteered for Missionary service when he heard that Chalmers had been killed, in 1904 he was sent out to Papua and set up a one-man station on the Fly River and later at Aird Hils in the vast Kikori River Delta, his autobiography is written with zest and humour, but also of considerable anthropological interest, as he made a close study of Papuan tribal customs and where possible sought to preserve the best of those traditions. He left Papua for his homeland (England) in the early 1940's in the early years of the Pacific War.
