1900. New York and London: Harper and Brothers, 1900. Royal 8vo. Orig. crushed half green morocco over marbled paper boards with ornate gilt-stamped rose on front covers. Spines with raised bands, gilt titles and dec. with gilt-stamped roses (spines slightly discoloured). Top edges gilt, other edges uncut. With frontispieces in two states (on japon vellum and a printer's proof) each with tissue guards. In vols I-VIII, the japon vellum frontispieces are each signed by the relevant artist; in the remaining volumes, the frontispieces include portraits of Goldsmith et al. Additional illuminated title-pages printed in gold, red, blue and black also on japon vellum, as are numerous illusts throughout, each with captioned tissue guard. Matching marbled endpapers. A beautiful set in fine condition. NOTE: Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was the celebrated British poet, playwright and novelist, and a close acquaintance of Dr. Johnson.
