In May 1988, the Australian Club celebrated the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its foundation. The Australian Club is thus not only the first of its kind in Australia but is also relatively old within the tradition of the Gentleman's Club, an essentially English tradition which blossomed in the nineteenth century. Not surprisingly, the Club has a colorful history inextricably linked, through the activities of its early members, with the development of both the Colony of New South Wales and later, the Commonwealth of Australia. Leading figures in a variety of fields have been among its membership. The Club's membership has reflected Sydney's evolution from a predominantly convict settlement to a thriving port, through which the Colony's agricultural products flowed and ultimately to a commercial, manufacturing, industrial and financial centre. Wars, depressions and booms also affected the seemingly sheltered world within the Club. A fascinating read in a brilliant copy.. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
