Viking / Penguin Books, publishers, Ringwood, Melbourne - ISBN:067080309X, 1985. hardcover, 8¾" x 10", with dust jacket. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, barcode etc. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket. Sam Byrne was born in 1883, the year the fabulous silver lode of Broken Hill was discovered. He lived his life in the outback mining community of the Barrier Ranges, in the desolate backblocks of New South Wales. When he retired, he began energetically depicting his memories in a painting style that owes more to the bush ballad and outback yarn than to the world of art. In a real way, he is a folk historian who brought to Australian art an anecdotal quality. 42 full-colour reproductions, many, many in b&w, and an outstanding collection of historic outback-living photographs. Great book!
