Marbled edges and endpapers, prize plate of the Council on each paste-down: Examination for the Degree of Associate of Arts, 1856; awarded to Charles Ellis Davies, for Mathematics. Faint damp stains on the boards of two of the three volumes, and a few other marks, but generally the covers in very nice condition, the gilt bright and only the faintest rubbing on the extremities. Internally fine. ISBN ***The Council of Education was then the only body in Tasmania conducting tertiary course and examinations. Charles Ellis Davies, was the son of John Davies, the Jewish emancipist who had a remarkable colonial career as a policeman, actor, journalist - and later newspaper proprietor (The Hobart Mercury) - and member of parliament. Charles and his brother John were educated at the Hobart High School and The Hutchins School, and both later had distinguished careers in Hobart Town business and society, and in the Tasmanian Parliament: Charles in the Legislative Council and John (who was also Mayor of Hobart) in the House of Assembly. .
