London: W.H. Allen, 1945. 325 grammes; foreword by Charles B. Cochran. The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs and sketches. Blue coloured boards with small red insert to the front panel and within that insert gilt writing. Red inserts to the spine with title of the book inserted and gilt writing along the blue cloth of the spine. This book is showing age and wear. Heavy bumping and rubbing to the head and to the heel of the spine and to the book corners. The rear spine gutter has split, for the first 3 " from the top edge. There are other areas where the spine has split along that same edge. The front spine gather edge is very worn and the first 0.25 " has split. The cloth of the book has become worn and marked, particularly the back panel. Heavy browning, light foxing and staining to the paper edges. Offset tanning, browning and faint foxing to the end papers and internal pages have become quite brown as well. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste down and previous owner's name to the top right-hand corner of earthly front endpaper. The book was made in conformity with authorised economy standards of the Second World War and pages 95-96 and 73-74 are not flush/or have other faults. The spine has split between pages 36 and 37 and underlying webbing is visible. Gertrude Lawrence's autobiography. Frank and impulsive, the writer reveals herself throughout. She never minces matters; she never deludes herself or her readers.
