A scarce account of Pacific life and customs written by the wife of the expedition leader "The scientific expedition mentioned in the title started from Sydney on June 2nd, 1897, under the leadership of Professor T.W. Edgeworth David. It was financed partly by the Royal Society of London, and partly by the government and private citizens of New South Wales, and its object was to ascertain the structure of coral atolls by putting a diamond drill bore down one of them. The atoll selected was Funafuti, belonging to the Ellice group, lying about 8 degrees south of the equator and 700 miles north of Fiji.
