Charles Godfrey (1851-1900) was Music Hall's greatest exponent of the dramatic song scene .He started as a Lion Comique singing songs about Mashers and getting drunk. However he is best remembered for patriotic sketches and songs such as this. Sadly his enormous popularity contributed through overwork and too much imbibing to an early demise. Francis Bros & Day ,in 1881 persuaded Harry Hunter to join them both in the Mohawks Minstrel troupe and in the publishing business . So this song was probably late 1870's.Folio size with music.
