Original brown cloth, gold-blocked cover illustration and spine tiles, blind rules: extremities slightly rubbed but cloth and gilt bright, short split in the cloth at head of lower joint. Now in protective mylar dustwrapper. Bookseller's blind stamp at top corner front free endpaper, presentation inscription on verso of ffep 'Charles Ellis Davies / a present on his 16th birthday / from his affectionate Mamma, May 13th 1864', and Davies' name written at head of dedication page. Very clean: a very good copy. ***Charles Ellis Davies, was the son of John Davies, the Jewish emancipist who had a remarkable colonial career as a policeman, actor, journalist - and later newspaper proprietor (The Hobart Mercury) - and member of parliament. Charles and his brother John were educated at the Hobart High School and The Hutchins School, and both later had distinguished careers in Hobart Town business and society, and in the Tasmanian Parliament: Charles in the Legislative Council and John (who was also Mayor of Hobart) in the House of Assembly. .
