Sydney, Woolcott and Clarke .c1854 With a Green and Red ornate lettered cover by the Sydney printers Kemp and Fairfax. Joseph Gung'l(1810-89) was born in Hungary and began his working life as a schoolteacher. Then enlisted in the Austrian Army and played the oboe and eventually became the Bandmaster . In 1849 he was appointed music director to the King of Prussia and then in 1858 Kappelmeister to the Emperor of Austria. In all he was said to have composed 300 dances and marches for the most part distinguished by a charming melody and marked rhythm. The Sydney publishers Woolcott & Clarke were only operating between 1851-6 and are amongst the earliest of Australian publishers , there is a back page catalogue list of music published by the Sydney firm. A rather scarce item. Folio size with music. Condition VG.
