1800. Performed by Order of the Constituent Assembly, during the years 1791,1792,1793, and 1794, ... Transl.from French. Lond: John Stockdale, 1800. 4to. Orig. full old tree calf. Spine with raised bands and red morocco titling-label (rubbed; hinges starting but sound) (XVIII,II,17-476,66,2pp.). Illustrated with 46 fine engrv.plates of which one is a large fold.map. Besides some offsetting of the plates, a generally fine copy of the rare First English Edition. (F.309). A subsequent 8vo. issue (see F.310) was also published. NOTE: After three years had passed by, without any news of the ill-fated expedition under La Perouse, the French Government sent out to the South Seas two vessels, the Recherche and the Esperance, under the command of D'Entrecasteaux and Kermadec to search for La Perouse. Among the scientists was the naturalist attached to the Expedition, Labillardiere. Although entirely unsuccessful in its search the voyage was of considerable importance. Labillardiere gives the first scientific description of the New Zealand flax, and brought back several New Zealand plants. He describes the visits paid by the expedition to Tasmania, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Tongan or Friendly Islands, New Zealand, etc., etc.
