*Recent book description for this title:*
1773. Faithfully transcribed from the papers of the late Sydney Parkinson, Draughtsman to Joseph Banks, Esq. on his late Expedition, with Dr. Solander, round the World. ... London: Printed for Stanfield Parkinson, 1773. Large 4to. Contemporary full calf with morocco titling label on spine (spine delicate with hinges weak but sound; spine extremities and corner points restored). Spine gilt with raised bands. Dentelles. (XXIV, 212, 2pp.). With engraved portait, a map, 26 full-page engraved plates, and the errata directions to binder leaf at end. Some foxing and offsetting otherwise a good large paper copy with wide margins. 1st edition. Parkinson was a young artist employed by Joseph Banks on Cook's first voyage and died of dysentry at Batavia near the end of the voyage. Being a civilian, his journal was not handed over to the Admiralty and his brother Stanfield attempted to get it through the press and published before the official record edited by Hawkesworth could appear. When Hawkesworth learned of this impending publication he organised an injuction to stop its publication until after the official version was published. Angered by Stanfield Parkinson's intentions, Hawkesworth went so far as to omit Sydney Parkinson from the official account, not even giving him credit for the twenty-three botanical illustrations executed by him which were published in the official account. Consequently, Stanfield Parkinson felt he had a grievance against Banks which he aired in his preface. Parkinson's journal is the most attractive of the unofficial accounts of Capt. Cook's first voyage and is highly significant for it records some of the first European depictions of landscape, natives, artifacts and natural history in the region. Beaglehole, Vol. 1, pp. CCLIII - CCLV; Beddie, 712; Hill, pp. 223-225; Holmes, 7.
