London, Duncombe & Moon . 1849-52 . With a monochrome unsigned lithographic portrait of the ballet dancer Madlle. Francesca Auriol who appears to dancing a Spanish piece as she has a pair of castanets in her hands and three or four bouquets at her feet including a garland with her name. Sadly there is little information on the dancer Auriol who does merit an entry in The Romantic Ballet by Sitwell and Beaumont, for her performance in 1848 in Esmeralda and a lithograph by Baugniet else remains obscure. However Charles Mathews(1804-78) was the partner and eventual husband of Eliza Vestris at this time and it is reasonable to suppose that Auriol was dancing for the actress /Manager and her talented actor/ composer husband.. In 1856 Mme Vestris died, and in the following year Mathews again visited the United States, where in 1858 he married Mrs. A.H. Davenport. Together, they acted both in America and in London.. The London publishing firm of Duncombe & Moon were only together between 1849-53.and the Edinburgh co publisher moved from that address in 1852 and so 1849-52 seems reasonable.Folio size with music. Condition VG.
