The famous poem was written in 1858 by English author and clergyman Charles Kingsley(1819-1875) and Blockley was notable for being very quick to set appropriate poems. John Blockley (1800-82) was one of a number of composer publishers who set the best poets (Tennyson and Longfellow and Norton) to their music and in so doing made a huge amount of money. In fact Blockley set The Sands of the Dee and the Poachers Widow also to music and he published them all and shared publishers rights with Addison .Folio size with music.
