With a monochrome lithograph by Alexander Laby of a snow covered scene, a mother and two children standing by a house watching the snow falling and in the background an archway of trees leading to a church. Isa Craig, (1831-1903) born in Edinburgh, was largely self-educated in literature. By 1853, she worked at and contributed poems to the newspaper the Scotchman. Her first book, Poems by Isa, came out in 1856. She left Scotland for London in 1857. Her most famous poem was an Ode on Burns, which won a prize at the Crystal Palace in 1858. Two more books, Poems: An Offering to Lancashire and Duchess Agnes, a Drama, and Other Poems, followed in 1863 and 1864. She married her cousin, John Knox, in 1866. John Blockley (1800-82) was one of a number of composer publishers who set the best poets (Tennyson and Longfellow and Norton) to their music and in so doing made a huge amount of money.Folio size with music.
