London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1874. 8vo. 438pp with 48pp publishers list dated October 1873. Original publisher's gilt and blind stamped maroon cloth. Illustrated with two-page colour map and numerous full-page and in-text engravings. Binders label: Bound by Burn & Co. on rear end board. MacGahan (1844-1878), a native of Perry County, Ohio, pursued a European education before becoming a war correspondent for The New York Herald during the Franco Prussian War. "There followed his ride into the desert of Central Asia (1873), which, according to Eugene Schuyler, American secretary of the legation at St. Petersburg, was 'spoken of everywhere. As by far the most wonderful thing that had ever been done there.' He defied the Russian embargo on newspapermen to find the expedition sent out under General Kaufman to reduce the Khandate of Khiva. Cossacks pursued him almost a thousand miles. After twenty-nine days, with two attendants who could not understand his language, sometimes forced to wade to his knees in sand and several times `lost' he reached the camp. As an American he was allowed to stay; as a molodyetz, a hero, he instantly became popular. With the army he remained through the campaign against Khiva and the war with the Turkomans. At Khiva he met General Skobelev and they became affectionate friends" MacGahan is also remembered for his coverage of the "Bulgarian Atrocities" in July and August of 1876. It was his reports for the London Daily News, which aroused English sentiment against the Turks, and which in turn, prevented British intervention. Spine shaken and several pages loose, extremities a little rubbed and marked. A complete copy. . First Edition.
