London: Macmillan. 1942. [22x14.5cm]. Very Good in original green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spines. Some rubbing to corners and spine ends of Volume I. Vol. I - 653 pages; Vol. II - 586 pages. Rebbeca West's account of her three journey's to Yugoslavia in the years immediately preceeding the outbreak of World War Two. It is simply one of the largest, most ambitious and greatest books of the 20th century. When she finished the half-a-million word manuscript in early 1941, her publisher Macmillan did not hesitate to publish it in full, even though there were strict wartime constraints on the availability of paper - they were utterly compelled by the narrative. THIS COPY IS SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY REBECCA WEST IN 1948 "With all good wishes to J. Stoddart from Rebecca West". A scarce book in its own right made even more precious by the author's inscription. . 2nd Impression. Hardbound.
