Half title with imprimatur on verso, title printed in red & black. 16 folding maps as called for, 14 by Robert Morden, and 2 probably by him. xviii,428pp + 4pp (advertisement for the bookbinder, pub's adverts & corrigenda], Sm8vo. The original boards professionally re-covered in tan leather, the original rich brown panelled & blindstamped calf top & bottom pieces, &spine with raised bands, relaid. Whilst elements of the original boards are worn or missing, sympathetic restoration enables us to appreciate the original, & this is an attractive, sound & clean copy. Slight creasing & browning in eps. Very good. Morden's business was called The Atlas, and he sold 'Globes, Books, Maps, Made and Sold' in Cornhill. The Preface notes the purpose was to 'present the younger Sort of our Nobility and Gentry with a Compendious, Pleasant and Methodical Tract of Modern Geography, that most Useful Science which highly deserves their regard in a peculiar manner'. Dedicated to Thomas, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury. Offers a comprehensive insight into the educated world of 18thC England.
