XVIII, 710 pp., last blank, preface by author, abbreviations employed in footnotes, glossary of Maori words, list of illustrations, maps and diagrams, chronology of principle events, bibliography and index. Coloured illustrated frontispiece, of Sir George Grey. Within the text there are black and white illustrations and maps -- one foldout: showing frontier defence 1856 -- 1858 in New Zealand. Purple coloured boards with gilt writing on spine. The corners of the book slightly rubbed and bumped and shelf wear is evident to the bottom edges of book. The head and the heel of the spine are both bumped and soft with loss of colour to the extreme edges. There has been loss of colour [ in a speckled pattern] to the lower edges of book. The front hinge is a trifle slack. There are dust marks to the top paper edge as well as handling marks to the internal pages. On fore edge of the paper there is a red ink mark. Bookseller's sticker on front paste down. Plain text dustwrapper with dark blue decoration and grey background, black writing on front panel and the spine. Dustwrapper is rubbed, particularly on fore edges of the fold overs, spine gutters and corners. Spine is sunned, and is now a brown colour with some staining on it as well. Slight chipping to the top and bottom spine edges. Grubby marks to all surfaces.
