First published in 1853, Charles Walter Kinloch visited Penang, Singapore and Java in 1852. He was recovering from ill health, the original title of the book was De Zieke Reiziger (The Invalid Traveller,) and was thus among the first pure tourists to visit the region and certainly the first to write an account of his travels. His perceptive and often tart observations make for an interesting account! .
