The text is illustrated with 16 pages of colour and black and white contemporary illustrations, maps, drawings and paintings. Bottle green boards with gilt writing on spine. Minor scuffing to the bottom edges of book and some marks the paper edges. Illustrated dustwrapper, "Hunting for Whales in Guanabara Bay" by L. Joaquim ?1780s,with pale green background and white and dark green writing on front panel and spine. Dustwrapper rubbed and faded, most noticeable on spine and there are grubby marks to both panels and spine. There is rubbing along the spine gutters. Arthur Phillip is now remembered for being the first Governor of the colony of Botany Bay, a unique venture even for the 18th-century. But he was more than just founding Governor he was a naval officer of extensive experience "this was a striking 18-century naval career, reflecting both personal curiosity and the range of war and of the Royal Navy's operations.".
