The Salvation Army Australia 1st edition 2003. Card covers with flaps square 8 vo 136pp b&w photos. Fine (new book) Signed by author on title page. The story of the Band of the 2/22nd Battalion, their posting to Rabaul on the island of New Britain, and their ultimate tragic fate. Of the more than 1400 Australians defending Rabaul, only about 400 escaped back to Australia. Some 200 were killed immediately upon surrendering, and over 800 died whilst being transported from New Britain. Amongst those who perished were 22 Salvation Army Bandsmen who had enlisted into the 2/22nd under Bandmaster Arthur Gullidge. Fred Kollmorgen was the only survivor and the Band's story is told through Fred's words. Also draws on the letters of Arthur Gullidge, Frank Meddings, Stan Parker, Harold Pannell, Wilfred Tigg and others.
