He started off learning to fly on Tiger Moths in 1950 and retired 30 years later as an Air Commodore. During that time, he served in Malta with 78 (Fighter) Wing, flew Canberra bombers for three years, was a flying instructor, flew a desk for awhile, commanded RAAF forces at Butterworth (where he flew Mirages) and eded up as Director General of Personal Services (Air Force) in the Department of Defence prior to retirement.
