London ,C. Jefferys. c early 1840's . Folio with music. With a monochrome lithograph cover by the masterful John Brandard with an ornate frame of flowers and cherubs and at the bottom a portrait of the heroine of the song and inset a wonderful portrait of the her handing back a necklace to a young man seemingly as she rejects his advances. The lyric is by the author of We've Lived & Loved Together who sadly remains anonymous. The music by George Linley (1798-1865). Originally born in Leeds and moved to London as young man. He wrote some of the most popular drawing room lyrics of the mid 19th century-Ever of Love ofThee,I cannot mind my Wheel,mother.He wrote several operas between 1850-65 and later books of Nursery Rhymes and Hymn Tunes. The ornate cover illustrated is by John Brandard (1812-1863) who specialised in Waltz,Polka covers and mainly ballet and opera covers. He worked extensively with Michael and Nicholas Hanhart to produce these opulent sheets.This is a very early Brandard. Some light waterstains and ancient damp intruding along the outer edges though not unduly else Good.
