Michael Joseph, London - third impression, 1984. hardcover, 8 3/4' x 5 1/2", with dust jacket. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket. Dark-blue cloth-bound boards with gold type to spine. Bates loved the British countryside and was influenced by the great Russian writers of the nineteenth century - both are apparent here in the first omnibus volume of his works. Amongst the eleven works selected here is his ''The Darling Buds of May' (which became a popular TV series), 'The Triple Echo' (later, a distinguished romantic film), and 'The Purple Plain', one of his three novels about the war in the East. Some say H E Bates is the 'twentieth century's Thomas Hardy' - this volume appears to justify that parallel.
