Lindsay Drummond, London - first edition in English, 1939. hardcover, 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" (lacks jacket). Ours is an ex-library copy with part flap blurb mounted to front paste-down, usual library stamps, barcode, embossing, stickers & pocket, etc. While its binding remains firm, spine shows excessive wear to all edges. Dark endpapers. Book in FAIR condition. Red cloth-bound boards with gold type to spine & front, select bibliography, and index. German and Jew have lived side-by-side for over sixteen hundred years, and it is a story - now told for the first time (Nov, 1939) - essential to an understanding of both Nazidom and its Jewish policy. In clear and vivid language the author describes the first Jewish settlement on the Rhine in the 3rd century and shows how, early in their German history, the Jews were threatened with extinction. But they were saved by the Frank invasion, and in a disunited and ravaged Germany they found respite and employment. It is a history of strangely alternating friendship and enmity, co-operation and dissension - love feasts followed by massacres. Cover cloth is soiled. Fading stamp to top edge.
