John Murray, London - first edition, 1974. hardcover, 8 1/2' x 5 1/2:", with dust jacket. Gift inscription to ffep. Small white-out to ffep. Sun fading to spine of jacket. Firm binding. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD price-clipped dust jacket. Pink cloth-bound boards with gold type to spine, colour plate as frontis ('Salon at Casa Guidi' by Mignaty), eight photographs (inc several sephia portraits), index. These are intimate, affectionate letters. The one bond between the two friends was evidently that of children; while EBB had four miscarriages and one child, Mrs Ogilvy succeeded in having seven children, although she lost two. The letters are also full of ideas and comments which illuminate familiar literary figures; they give EBB's thoughts on subjects ranging from political events to the literary efforts of fellow authors. Mrs Ogilvy published several books of her poetry and in her memoir of EBB (which is published in this volume), she states that Elizabeth had asked her to keep the letters between them private.
