LAST ITEM HELD MATCHING THIS TITLE STATED:
David & Charles, Newton Abbot, UK, 1979. Hardcover, 9½" x 6", with dust jacket. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, and barcode etc. Jacket blurb mounted to half-title page. Slight lean to spine. GOOD book in GOOD price-clipped dust jacket. Black cloth-bound boards with gold title to spine, photographic frontis ('Emma Procter, English prostitute, c 1860'), 85 b&w photographs & illustrations, bibliography, and index. This is a comprehensive social history of one of the oldest of human institutions. This is anything but a sensational book, and avoids adopting extreme positions; the author lets the historical evidence and the comments of prostitutes (and customers) speak for themselves, inviting the reader to form their own opinions on the social and moral issues involved.
