Andre Deutsch, London - first edition, 1985. hardcover, 9 1/2" x 6 1/4", with dust jacket. Previous owner's inscription inside dustjacket flap. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket. Grey cloth-bound boards with gold type to spine, map endpapers [northern India], glossary of terms at rear. This is far from the usual "search for the father" novel - firstly, it is set in northern India, next, like Oliver Twist, the hero's childhood is spent in a Boy's Home (the Mission Society for the Propagation of the Revealed Word Asylum for Orphan Boys), finally, it takes place during the 1870s. It is a salty tale of the road, with the hero leading us through India as the Indians must have seen it, casting new light on a history too often viewed from a British perspective. In its scope, splendour and variety it captures the essence of the subcontinent - the high-life, the low-life, the holy life, and the dark rituals of nineteenth century India.
