Michael Joseph, London - first edition, 1979. hardcover, 8 3/4" x 5 1/2", with dust jacket. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket. Black cloth-bound boards with silver type to spine, map endpapers, 18 b&w photographs, postlude, notes, sources, index. This is a moving & remarkable study of courage & heroic resistance to the Nazis as shown by the people of Le Chambon, a small Huguenot town in Southern France. There, under the eyes of the Vichy and a Nazi SS division, the local clergy & citizens harboured thousands of Jewish refugees, saving them from the concentration camps. A previously-untold story. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, pocket etc (borrowed once!).
