Methuen & Co, London - first edition, 1967. hardcover, 9 1/2" x 6 1/4", with dust jacket. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, barcode etc. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD price-clipped DJ. From Methuen's 'Handbooks on Archeology' series. Black cloth-bound boards with gold type to red spine label, tinted top edge, fold-out map at rear, 50 b&w photographic plates (at rear), select bibliography, topographical index, subject index. This book covers the whole range of west African archeology to the arrival of the Portuguese on the Guinea coast. Parts of the territory are ill-explored, and emphasis is accordingly laid on the better-known regions: Ghana, Nigeria (patchily-known), the middle Niger valley and Western Senegal (explored by the Institut Francais d'Afrique noire). Two initial chapters deal with the geographical background and the chronological frame. Subsequent chapters deal with the Palaeolithic, neolithic and early iron ages, and the book concludes with a brief account of the protohistoric period.
