Victor Gollancz Ltd, publisher, London, 1955. hardcover, 5½" x 8", with dust jacket. Minor wear to jacket edges. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD price-clipped dust jacket. When the Social Revolutionary Party split during the early days of the revolution, Steinberg, aged 29, became a Commisar of Justice in the first Soviet Government. In this position he fought against the use of terror as a political weapon. His period in office was short, and he was subsequently arrested and jailed. Upon his release, he escaped the USSR in 1923. Part of this book was written on scraps of paper in a Moscow prison and is here published for the first time.
