LAST ITEM HELD MATCHING THIS TITLE STATED:

Hodder & Stoughton, London - first printing, 1973. Hardcover, 9½" x 6¼", with dust jacket. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with jacket blurb mounted on half-title page. Usual stamps, stickers, barcode etc. GOOD book in GOOD unclipped dust jacket. Black cloth-bound boards with silver type to spine, map endpapers ('Russia at the Close of the Sixteenth Century'), 11 b&w illustrations, bibliography, and index. Godunov is known in the West mainly as the hero of Pushkin's tragedy and of Mussorgsky's opera, depicted as a despot, dedicated to the single-minded pursuit of supreme power. Ian Grey, in this book, does not accept this harsh assessment. He traces his life as Boris gradually and peacefully made himself indispensible to Ivan the Terrible and his son Fedor, eventually becoming Tsar himself. The years after Godunov's death surpassed the killings and horror of even Ivan the Terrible.
