John McKinlay was the first European to lead a team across the Australian continent from the south coast to the north and return safely. He led the South Australian Burke Relief Expedition (although Burke & Wills were dead before he left). Three years later John McKinlay was stranded in Northern Territory's western Arnhem Land - he saved his party of 15 by building a punt and sailing for six days down the swollen East Alligator River out into the Arafura Sea, one of the most amazing stories of survival.
