Macdonald Futura, publishers, London - ISBN:0354046500, 1981. hardcover, 7¾" x 10½", with dust jacket. Minor tear to jacket edge. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD price-clipped dust jacket. Soon after its first publication in 1910, this book was hailed as a classic - it is a rich storehouse of information on the animal and human life of the Wiltshire Downs near Salisbury. The book's central character 'Caleb Bawcombe' is based on several real-life shepherds (especially perhaps one James Lawes of the village of Martin). Author Hudson learnt much from him about sheepdogs, gypsies, rovers, poachers and game-keepers and particularly about humble men and women. Highly illustrated.
