Hutchinson of London - first edition, 1962. Hardcover, 9¼" x 5¾", with dust jacket. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with stamps, stickers, pocket, barcode etc. 1" front hinge exposed. Jacket blurb mounted to half-title page. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD price-clipped dust jacket. Red cloth-bound boards with gold type to green spine label, and gold musical emblem to front cover, grey endpapers, bibliography, index of principal works, and general index. The majority of music-lovers have little knowledge of the great choral works - but this distinguished author claims, for example, that Palestrina, Byrd, Monteverdi and Bach provide the clearest musical index to the life and thought of Western civilisation. This book surveys the choral achievements of nearly 500 years, ranging from "The Westron Wynde" Mass of John Taverner (c.1495-1545) and the "Stabat Mater" of Palestrina to such significant works of the twentieth century as Stravinsky's "Symphony of Psalms". This is a major work by a man whose life, as composer, conducter, author and teacher, is dedicated to the cause of music and the community it serves.
