Hamish Hamilton, London - first edition, 1953. hardcover, 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" (lacks jacket). Pencil scribbles to front endpapers, and pps 12/13. Crease to page 223/4. Rear paste-down partially removed; binding remains sound. Covers scuffed; corners dumped. Book in POOR condition. Dark-blue cloth-bound boards with silver type to spine, 22 b&w illustrations, and index. The 'Great Eastern' had an unenviable history - her designer was killed, her first captain drowned, she had four mutinies, she survived the Atlantic's weirdest storm, she sank four other ships, caused a dozen lawsuits, and was sold at auction six times! The 'Great Eastern' ended her time as a floating circus. This is her sorry story.
